The Giant Pedal
Riding for Pediatric Brain Tumor & Posterior Fossa Syndrome Support
In May 2027, during National Brain Tumor Awareness Month, the Love is the Cure Foundation will launch the Giant Pedal, a transcontinental cycling journey from the Pacific Northwest to Boston, Massachusetts.
This ride is built to bring targeted support, hope, and resources to children fighting medulloblastomas and navigating the life-altering effects of Posterior Fossa Syndrome.
The Symbolism Behind the Bikes
Lyndell will navigate the transcontinental route on Inigo’s recumbent trike, while Alfonso will ride a traditional bicycle.
Each bike represents a crucial dimension of the pediatric cancer experience:
-
The Recumbent Trike: Represents finding the "key" to moving forward after Posterior Fossa Syndrome. When surgery stripped away Inigo's balance, speech, and motor control, adapting to this trike helped retrain his nervous system, restore his independence, and give him back the simple joy of riding.
-
The Standard Upright Bicycle : Represents what Inigo loved before his diagnosis—the traditional bike he could no longer ride once PFS set in. It stands for the childhood experiences altered by cancer, and our commitment to supporting families as they navigate the long-term, lifelong impacts of PFS.
Understanding Medulloblastoma & Posterior Fossa Syndrome
To understand why adaptive solutions and targeted research are so critical, it helps to understand the medical realities children face with these diagnoses:
-
Pediatric Medulloblastoma: Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor in children, accounting for roughly 15% to 20% of all pediatric brain tumor cases. While 5-year survival rates reach 70% to 80% for average-risk cases, survival drops to around 60% if the disease has spread or carries high-risk features.
-
Posterior Fossa Syndrome (PFS): Also known as Cerebellar Mutism Syndrome, PFS is a complex neurological complication occurring in approximately 15% to 25% of children following surgical resection of posterior fossa tumors like medulloblastoma. Onset typically develops 1 to 4 days after surgery.
-
The Long-Term Impacts: PFS causes severe neurological disruptions, including loss of speech (mutism), impaired balance and motor coordination (ataxia), swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), and emotional lability. While initial abilities slowly return, PFS is rarely a temporary hurdle—most children experience lasting motor, cognitive, and physical side effects that require long-term adaptation and support.
Our Mission
This voluntary cross-country journey is not meant to equal the daily, unchosen struggles children and families face throughout treatment and recovery.
Instead, it is our way of rallying around these families—turning physical effort into tangible community support, elevated awareness, and critical funding for pediatric brain tumor research and adaptive needs.
Every mile pedaled honors Inigo’s quiet resilience and serves as a physical reminder of the effort required to scale this medical mountain together.
Our Campaign Goals
With every mile behind us, we aim to raise national awareness and secure vital funding for our three core pillars:
-
Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Research: Funding cutting-edge research to advance safer, more effective treatments and cures.
-
Family Relief: Providing financial assistance to families navigating active treatment and recovery.
-
Recumbent Trikes: Sponsoring and delivering adaptive recumbent trikes to Spaulding Rehabilitation in Boston, giving children recovering from PFS access to the exact tools that aid motor recovery.
Join the Journey
The Giant Pedal is a journey of active love, resilience, and action—proving that when we step forward together, we can tackle the complex hurdles of pediatric cancer and bring real hope to the children we serve.
As we count down to May 2027, our team is training hard in preparation for the road ahead.
Real progress requires a unified community. You can support the Giant Pedal campaign in several ways:
-
Your donation can sponsor a mile or many: Direct your support to fund pediatric cancer research and adaptive equipment for recovering children.
-
Spread the Word: Share Inigo’s story and help raise awareness about the lifelong realities of Posterior Fossa Syndrome.
-
Follow the Ride: Track Lyndell and Alfonso’s progress as they cross the country starting in May 2027.
